The Music Teacher was in the middle of explaining how she chooses a musical when she stopped herself, laughed, and said: "Actually, this year I didn't choose it. The students basically chose it for me." She paused for effect. "And they were right."

The July Musical is Lumen School's biggest annual performing arts event. Every year the entire school community — students, teachers, families — packs into the auditorium for a full theatrical production featuring singing, dancing, and acting performed entirely by Lumen students. This year, the production is more ambitious than any previous edition. The title has not yet been officially announced.

How did the selection process for this year's show work?
Music Teacher: We look at what the students can do, what the school can produce well, and what will give the audience an experience they remember. This year we also asked students directly — we did a survey and the results were very clear. The students wanted something big, something emotional, and something with great music. We delivered on all three.
What does the preparation process look like from here?
Music Teacher: We have already started. Students are learning the music while the choreography is being planned. The hardest part of a show like this is getting singing, movement, and character all happening at the same time — and feeling natural rather than forced. That takes time and repetition and a lot of patience from everyone.
What moment from a past Lumen musical do you still think about?
Instrument Teacher: There was a student — I will not say who — who was absolutely terrified before going on stage. I watched her standing in the wings, shaking. Then the music started, and she walked out, and something just switched. She was completely transformed. The audience had no idea. When she came off stage she burst into tears — happy ones. Those are the moments you do this for.
